Women of the Wall is an independent, autonomous, and highly diverse prayer group. Founded in 1988, it represents Jewish women who wish to pray aloud together, with tallit and tefillin if they wish, and to read from the Torah scroll at the Western Wall, site of millennia of Jewish devotion and hope. Women of the Wall meets each Rosh Hodesh (New Moon) for prayer at the Wall, coming together in solidarity, with respect for one another, for the holy place, and for other worshippers, including those who differ with the group.

Women of the Wall’s practice is in keeping with halacha (Jewish law), and though opposition on the ground continues, recently Israeli courts have affirmed the groups’ rights. This and other new developments make it a particularly exciting time to visit Israel and to join in as Women of the Wall marks its anniversary. All supporters are warmly invited to take part in its joyous traditional monthly prayer and additional anniversary events, whether or not they join the mission.

Tour participants will travel from Tel Aviv to Caesaria to Tsfat to Jerusalem and many sites in between, expanding their knowledge of the land, of the many manifestations of Israeli Judaism, and of women’s place in ancient and Zionist history. They’ll also explore issues such as pluralism and “What Price Freedom?” in the larger Israeli context.

Women of the Wall has seen an explosion of support in recent months, but the most valuable supporters are those who are well-informed.
