Shalom, I stand by Women Of the Wall in their pursuit to achieve the social and legal recognition of our right, as women, to wear prayer shawls, pray, and read from the Torah collectively and out loud at the Western Wall. The Western Wall is a cherished national monument that belongs to all of us. It is the role of the city's police and internal security to protect and serve the daily visitors to the Old City. All those that visit the Western Wall Plaza and the Wall itself should feel secure and comfortable in their surroundings. As a supporter of Women Of the Wall, I find it humiliating that the police — a force that is supposed to protect and serve — are instructing women how to wear a tallit, not as a prayer shawl but as a scarf. Presently, the Old City police officers have stated how a woman should wear her tallit and what color it should be. This decree is offensive, unacceptable, and an abuse of power. I support Women Of the Wall in their mission to change the status-quo that is preventing women from being able to pray freely at the Western Wall.
